Sydney’s original settlers included former soldiers and Loyalists escaping the chaos following the American Revolution. The town was the English capital of Cape Breton Island from its founding until , when the island colony and its rich coal fields became part of Nova Scotia. It was that coal that would transform Sydney from a colonial town in Cape Breton into a major industrial center, becoming a world leader in steel production.
That industrial growth saw Sydney officially become a city in , welcoming workers and their families from around the province and world. Today, Sydney continues to welcome people from around the world as they come to visit the city and the beautiful island of Cape Breton.

Usually a fan of national parks, this one has a few minuses. The staff here was very friendly and helpful. The entrance to the campground is odd. Coming in from the direction of Cheticamp, there is a large Visitor’s Center with temporary parking for large rigs and a sign indicating a pass is needed to enter the park. Bypass this and continue up the hill for 1km then turn left. That road meanders through the woods for about a mile crossing back under the highway and to the campground entrance station which is within 50′ of the parking lot we were just in.
Dry camping sites are large and level and can accommodate most rig sizes. It is a very short walk from the campsites to the visitor’s center if info is needed. Many of the full hookup sites are adjacent to a highway maintenance compound and much closer to their neighbors. At 8 AM you may be greeted with the trash trucks emptying the receptacles and we were treated to an excavator clinkty clanking through the campground to a work site the 1st morning.
The unserviced sites are preferable in my opinion. The water hookups are below ground and the position of the faucet on some make hard to install a pressure regulator if you don’t have an elbow. The sewer inlets are not threaded and a rubber donut is desirable.

As many as settlers lived in the nameless village in what is now present day Ingonish location according to some historians on the island’s northwestern peninsula. Toponymy[ edit ] Its name may derive from Capbreton near Bayonne , or more probably from Cape and the word Breton, the French demonym for Bretagne , the French historical region. These peoples and their progeny inhabited the island known as Unama’ki for several thousand years and continue to live there to this day. Their traditional lifestyle centred around hunting and fishing because of the unfavourable agricultural conditions of their maritime home.
This ocean-centric lifestyle did, however, make them among the first indigenous peoples to discover European explorers and sailors fishing in the St Lawrence Estuary.
